About the course

This Online Certificate Course, to be held on four consecutive Saturdays, aims to provide the participants an exposure and training to the methods of manual and digital documentation of cultural heritage. Practice, research and academic engagement of Architecture, more often than not, include methodical recording and documentation of the existing form of cultural heritage. Traditionally these processes have heavily depended upon rigorously measured drawings and keen human observations.  As technology continues to evolve with time, digital tools are providing increasingly detailed and accurate information within a relatively shorter time span. Choice of these tools, manual or digital, are often dependent on many contingencies of the site and resources. Through this course, practitioners and researchers will be enabled to decide on the appropriate tools and methods to use for documentation of cultural heritage, especially in the Indian context.

Architects involved with documentation of cultural heritage sites, teachers and researchers of Architecture, Urban Design and conservation will find this course extremely useful for preparing their processes and pedagogy for documenting historic built environment.

Course Structure

The course has been designed to accommodate three modules which take a deep-dive into the documentation of cultural heritage. Participants will go through lectures from experts, videos and case studies to understand the nuts and bolts of the subject. There will be four exercises aimed at giving participants, a hands-on training as they continue to delve during the duration of the different modules.

Modules:

Week 1: Measure Drawing

This module will deal with the manual processes of documentation of cultural heritage. It will include lectures from experts on tools to be used, conditions to be observed, health and safety measures, techniques of representation and addressing site contingencies and resource challenges.

Week 2: Digital Documentation-I

This module will introduce the participants to the state of the art digital technologies for documentation of cultural heritage through input lectures and case study presentations. Participants will be able to understand the possibilities, limitations and resources required for digital documentation. This will be supported by instruction videos on the methods and processes involved. In this week the focus will be on the technique of photogrammetry which will include data collection, stages of processing and arriving at the desired output. C

Week 3: Digital Documentation-II

In continuation with week 2, participants will be introduced to LiDAR scanning technology and GIS techniques for the data collection. Practical aspects of processing of point cloud data, use of available open-source platforms, data accession will be demonstrated in this module.

Week 4: Documenting Urban Sites

Documenting Historic Urban Areas requires a complex recording of architecture with a historic overview, activities, densities, mobilities and uses. This module will have input lectures and instructional videos on these aspects. Case studies of best practices of documenting urban sites will be presented as well.
