This podcast series, ‘Data for Disaster Risk Reduction, reflects the systemic use of data for handling disasters and effective decisions for post-disaster recovery. The series also focuses on the role of data at each stage of the disaster management cycle: Mitigation, Preparedness, Response, and Recovery. This podcast series will offer examples of various disasters and the timely decisions taken to reduce the impact of disasters and minimise the loss. This series is jointly hosted by the CODATA, Tonkin and Taylor, New Zealand, and the Center for Applied Geomatics. It offers a rich collection of conversations, case studies, and audio essays by eminent thinkers, practitioners, public decision-makers, and policy advocates to recall, reflect, discuss critical issues, and point out the way forward.
The first episode has Professor Virginia Murray, Head of Global Disaster Risk Reduction, UK Health Security Agency and Bapon Fakhruddin, Technical Director, Tonkin and Taylor.
In the first episode the two speakers will discuss emerging trends in climate change, disaster risks, and the role of data. Data system dynamics, and FAIR data for risk reduction, Sustainable Development Goals and health are discussed. Role of governments for utilisation of data and how International organisations can promote awareness.
This episode of the Data for Disaster Risk Reduction talks about preparing for adversity caused by Climate Change; risk levels can be assessed using vulnerability, exposure, and hazard data. Further, into the episode, the importance of quantitative and qualitative data is also discussed to ensure a holistic risk assessment.
The sixth episode of this podcast series has Dr. Bapon Fakhruddin, Chair for the CODATA Task Group on FAIR-DRR, a trained hydrologist with 17 years of working experience in water engineering, climate, and disaster risk management. His key areas of expertise are hydrological modeling, early warning system, emergency communication, climate-proofing infrastructure, and disaster risk reduction; and Ilan Kelman is a Professor of Disasters and Health at University College London, England, and a Professor II at the University of Agder, Kristiansand, Norway. His overall research interest links disasters and health, integrating climate change into both. Three main areas are (i) disaster diplomacy and health diplomacy, (ii) island sustainability involving safe and healthy communities in isolated locations, and (iii) risk education for health and disasters.
The fifth episode has Dr. Bapon Fakhruddin, Chair for the CODATA Task Group on FAIR-DRR, a trained hydrologist with 17 years of working experience in water engineering, climate, and disaster risk management. His key areas of expertise are hydrological modeling, early warning system, emergency communication, climate-proofing infrastructure, and disaster risk reduction; Dr. Animesh Kumar works at the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction as the Head of Office in Bonn. The UNDRR Bonn Office serves as the organization’s global facility for climate action and comprehensive risk management, disaster data, and monitoring of the Sendai Framework and SDGs.

Kanza is a Consultant in Global Public Health for the Global Disaster Risk Reduction and Global Health Security functions at the newly formed UK Health Security Agency. She has extensive experience in epidemiology and statistics, having graduated from the UK Field Epidemiology Training Programme (UK-FETP) in 2020.
