Dr. B. R. Balachandran is an urban planner and development consultant working at the intersection of planning, policy, and governance. He holds a PhD in Regional Planning from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and brings over three decades of experience to projects focused on resilience, sustainable development, and urban reform.
His areas of expertise include land use and transport planning, post-disaster recovery, affordable housing policy, and sanitation. He has served as an advisor to multilateral agencies such as the World Bank and KfW Bankengruppe, contributing to institutional reform and capacity building efforts in India, including the Rebuild Kerala Initiative.
Dr. Balachandran has held leadership and board roles with organizations including the Environmental Planning Collaborative, Alchemy Urban Systems, and CDD Society. His consulting portfolio spans work in India as well as in countries such as Sri Lanka, Mexico, Palestine, Bangladesh, and Indonesia.
In addition to his consulting work, he is actively engaged with academic institutions as a visiting faculty member and curriculum advisor in the fields of urban planning and development.
