Barjor Mehta is an architect and an urban development professional who served as the Lead Urban Specialist in the East Asia Urban and Disaster Risk Management team at the World Bank's China Country Office in Beijing. During his professional journey, he held urban development positions across multiple continents, with significant tenures in India's New Delhi office (2012-2016) and Tanzania's Dar es Salaam office (2009-2012), also overseeing initiatives in Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya.
Before these assignments, Barjor’s expertise spanned comprehensive urban planning and risk management projects across the Middle East, North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, East Asia, and South Asia, reflecting his global perspective and deep professional versatility.
Before joining the World Bank, he served as Associate Professor of Urban Planning from 1990 to 1995, and later as Director of the School of Planning at CEPT University (now called the Faculty of Planning) from 1995 to 1997. He has made significant contributions to urban planning projects in Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bhutan, and the United States. Barjor began his professional journey in 1981, working on UN-HABITAT’s urban planning initiative in Sri Lanka.
An alumnus (1974) of the CEPT’s UG Program of the Faculty of Architecture and a Master’s in Human Settlements Planning from the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Barjor’s vision and leadership continue to drive impactful, forward-thinking solutions for sustainable urban growth.
