Community Uses of Heritage Resources for Sustainable Development

Event

Fri, March 15, 2024 - Sat, February 17, 2024

Ahmedabad

The Center for Heritage and Conservation invites students and scholars of any built environment and design discipline to participate in the workshop on Community Uses of Heritage Resources for Sustainable Development in the World Heritage City of Ahmedabad. Simona Cosentino, a visiting research scholar from Nottingham Trent University (NTU), will conduct the three-day international workshop on March 15, 16 and 17, 2024.

Heritage is increasingly recognised as a crucial pathway to sustainable development, representing a significant economic and social capital to mobilise for community development. However, current integrations of heritage for sustainable development remain self-centred on its protection. Local communities often adapt their needs for preserving heritage rather than heritage addressing communities' aspirations and creative initiatives as a source of knowledge and innovation.

The workshop, located in the World Heritage Site of the Historic City of Ahmedabad, aims to analyse how communities mobilise their heritage, in both its tangible and intangible forms, as a means for local sustainable development, involving the students in the investigation and understanding of:

  1. communities' uncovered needs and various relationships with their heritage.
  2. communities' responses in adapting, challenging and using heritage, including international designations, for their livelihoods and development.
  3. the different narratives of heritage and development at the site level and their mediation.

Teaching Assistant: Ann Shojan, CEPT University.
