Lecture by Peter Graham on "Encouraging Buildings Sector Actions in Nationally Determined Contributions” organised by Centre for Advanced Research in Building Science and Energy, CEPT University, Ahmedabad
More than 136 countries, thousands of municipalities, and businesses have specifically mentioned action required by the building sector in their public climate commitments to mitigate and adapt to climate change. The Paris Agreement on Climate Change reached at COP21 in December 2015 has catalysed renewed demand for policy expertise and technical assistance to engage the building sector in helping to achieve Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and sub-national climate commitments. A number of countries have also recognised the buildings sector in National Adaptation Pans (NAPs). If aligned, NDCs and NAPs, together with the more extensive non-party stakeholder commitments provide a clear framework for action to decarbonize the buildings sector. This lecture will identify the key buildings sector actions being proposed, and where the gaps and opportunities lie for policy makers, practitioners and researchers.
