In its mission to improve quality of public transport and reduce emissions from the transport sector, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has plans to introduce electric buses as part of its bus fleet. The Center for Excellence in Urban Transport (CoE-UT) has been supporting AMC in this endeavour by helping them apply for capital funding support; prepare a procurement strategy; inspect and approve prototype vehicles; and develop a broad deployment plan. The CoE-UT applied for capital assistance to procure 50 buses under Government of India's ‘Faster Adoption & Manufacturing of (hybrid&) electric vehicles (FAME) program, which has been approved. The Chief Minister of Gujarat inaugurated this first fleet of electric buses on March 2, 2019. The buses have now been deployed on the BRTS route for operations and testing. CoE-UT will continue to work with AMC in scaling up of this initiative and will assist in procurement and deployment of 300 additional electric buses.
