The Water and Development Congress, organised by the International Water Association, provides a unique platform for water professionals across the globe to discuss and highlight good practices and innovative technologies to improve WASH outcomes. This year, the Congress was conducted at Kigali, Rwanda, between 10th and 14th December, 2023.
At the Congress, the Inclusive Urban Sanitation (IUS) Champions Programme recognised excellence, leadership, and innovation in the sanitation sector. The programme aims to encourage and recognise the contributions of sector players towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6.2 in low and middle-income countries (LAMIC). Sinnar Municipal Council was recognised as an IUS Champion in the category "disposal and reuse" for showcasing exemplary work at city-level sanitation service delivery. CWAS has provided support to Sinnar for sanitation improvements since 2013.
The Climate Smart Utilities Recognition Programme was also held at the Congress. This initiative seeks to recognise utilities in low and middle-income countries leading the way towards a low-carbon WASH sector, embracing the change needed to adapt to and mitigate climate change. Karad Municipal Council received outstanding recognition at this event for implementing innovations in mitigation and adaptation with energy efficiency, renewables and circular economy in water, sanitation and solid waste services, leading to the reduction of carbon emissions.
