Since becoming Open Defecation Free in 2017, Maharashtra has been working towards the goal of safe sanitation.  The state has been addressing the effective collection and treatment of human faecal waste in all its cities.  Cities in Maharashtra have implemented a cost-effective and non-mechanised treatment technology with the support of the Center for Water and Sanitation (CWAS). So far, more than 160 Faecal Sludge Treatment Plants (FSTPs) have become operational, with another 70 in various stages of construction.
