Bhuj Historic Water Systems, India is on the 2025 World Monuments Watch

Thu, January 16, 2025 Recognition

This year’s Watch includes various cultural heritage sites whose preservation is urgent and vital to the communities surrounding them. The 25 sites represent 29 countries across five continents and the Moon.

The Historic Water Systems of Bhuj nomination was submitted by Center for Heritage Conservation (CHC), CEPT Research and Development Foundation (CRDF). The nomination was led by Prof. Jigna Desai, Head of CHC, with Jayashree Bardhan, Program Lead for Assessment and Training at CHC, as the co-nominator. The 2025 open call resulted in over 200 nominations that underwent extensive internal and external review before final selection by an independent panel of international heritage experts. CHC has collaborated with the Bhuj-based ‘Homes in the City’ (HIC) programme for this nomination and has developed it in consultation with local stakeholders. HIC is a collective initiative of six civil society organisations in Bhuj.

The Historic Water System of Bhuj consists of a network of lakes, tanks, stepwells, wells, a qanat system, canals, and water channels directing water from nearby watersheds to Hamirsar Lake, designed to sustain the city of Bhuj.

Inclusion on the 2025 World Monuments Watch calls for greater awareness of these water systems and seeks to support efforts to revitalise them for the city’s long-term water security.  Learn more about the site and the Watch through the link.
