The Center for Water and Sanitation (CWAS), through a grant under the APAC Sustainability Seed Fund 2.0 (supported by Google.org and the Asian Development Bank), will undertake an innovative project on lake management and estimate the carbon sequestration potential of lakes. With growing concerns about climate change and freshwater conservation, this project aims to introduce smart and data-driven solutions for lake monitoring and management.
By leveraging digital technology such as satellite imagery and machine learning, the project will assess the water quality of selected lakes in five cities across Maharashtra and Gujarat in India. It aims to develop a tool to estimate and predict the carbon sequestration potential of the lakes and assess their overall health. This information will empower local authorities to make informed decisions for effective lake conservation efforts.
By addressing the limitations of traditional and manual monitoring approaches for lake conservations, this project aims to provide more meaningful actionable insights of lakes without any manual intervention. This project represents a significant step toward sustainable freshwater management and strengthening climate resilience efforts.
