The Center of Excellence in Urban Transport, in partnership with World Resources Institute (WRI) India, Urban Electric Mobility Initiative (UEMI), and Participatory Research in Asia (PRIA), is implementing a project to develop gender-responsive urban transport systems in India. Focused on the cities of Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Kochi, the project is funded by the European Union and aims to improve mobility for women, gender minorities, and marginalised communities, enhancing their economic opportunities and quality of life.

The primary goal is to address the unique mobility challenges faced by these groups, such as safety concerns, affordability, and accessibility, by integrating gender-specific data into transport planning. This will help create more inclusive, equitable, and efficient urban transport systems. The project will also foster collaboration between Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), government authorities, and local communities, building their capacity to advocate for gender-responsive mobility policies.

Through pilot initiatives in the three cities, the project will serve as a model for other cities, inspiring them to adopt similar measures. These pilots will focus on overcoming the gaps in current urban mobility plans, which often overlook gender-specific needs, especially those of women.
