A Country-level workshop on Master Plan preparation was organised on January 23rd, 2015, attracting approximately 80 planners, engineers, and nearly 50 students. The workshop focused on utilising the Bhuvan-NUIS Portal, a platform organised by the Town and Country Planning Organization (TCPO/MOUD), Government of India, in collaboration with the Urban Development and Urban Housing Department, Government of Gujarat, and the National Remote Sensing Centre, Hyderabad. The event was hosted by CEPT University in Ahmedabad back in the day and now it falls under the Center for Applied Geomatics (CAG).

The workshop focused on the significance of GIS (Geographic Information System) and Remote Sensing in urban planning and talked about the startling statistics regarding urban growth and the insufficient number of towns with approved master plans. To address this issue, the NUIS project aimed to map 152 towns using satellite imagery while emphasising on the availability of open maps for public use.

The workshop provided valuable insights into the urban planning scenario in Gujarat, explicitly focusing on the importance of GIS in spatial planning. The practical sessions and presentations enabled attendees to familiarise themselves with the Bhuvan-NUIS Portal and its application in master plan preparation. They guided participants through the process of creating Master Plans using the portal.
