Geospatial Data Standards: From Standards on Paper to Practice

A three-day national training programme on Geospatial Data Standards was jointly organised by the Survey of India (NIGST) and the CEPT Research and Development Foundation (CRDF), CEPT University, from 1–3 July 2026 at NIGST, Hyderabad.
The programme brought together 31 officers from the Survey of India, representing Geodetic Directorates and specialised wings across the country. Led by 13 distinguished experts from the Survey of India, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), international academic institutions, and CRDF's Center for Applied Geomatics (CAG), the training aimed to bridge the gap between geospatial standards and their practical implementation in operational workflows.
Programme Highlights
- Conducted hands-on laboratory sessions enabling participants to create, validate, and publish standards-compliant metadata using industry-standard geospatial platforms.
- Featured expert-led technical sessions on the National Geospatial Policy 2022, BIS LITD 22, ISO/TC 211, OGC standards, metadata, interoperability, data quality, and conformance testing.
- Facilitated interactive group discussions addressing real-world challenges related to metadata management, interoperability, data lineage, standards-compliant data creation, and implementation strategies.
- Included a dedicated session on CityGML, introducing participants to semantic 3D city modelling and its applications in urban planning, disaster risk reduction, digital twins, and smart city initiatives.
