Urban freight plays an essential role in the social and economic development of cities. Goods traffic represents a considerable proportion of urban traffic volume. As per the Road Transport Yearbook 2016-17, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MORTH), Government of India, LCV and truck account for a share of 30.6% and 19.3%, respectively, amongst the total registered transport vehicles. Yet, freight is often overlooked in discussions of urban transport, in contrast to passenger modes. Being essential for the economic development of the city, urban freight comes with several negative externalities which are not optimally addressed in the existing form of mobility management.
The SMART-SUT Mobilogues Series is a part of the National Capacity Building Programme organised by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), jointly supported by GIZ India and CRDF, CEPT University
The Mobilogue on Freight Management in Cities attempts to initiate a conversation focused on enabling efficient and sustainable urban freight management in Indian cities.
