The Mavericks of Mussoorie: Life in the Corridors of Power by Dr M Ramachandran, IAS (retd), traces the 38 years long journey of an IAS officer, offering the reader a unique insight into the trials and triumphs of working within the confines of a system in a surprisingly candid and often critical account. The author covers the expanse of his experiences of serving in two states, the Center and the United Nations Development Program, ultimately becoming the chief secretary of Uttarakhand and also serving as Secretary for Urban Development to Government of India, for close to four years. Despite a flawless and uniquely distinguished career Dr Ramachandran was not honoured with the top most civil services position when the opportunity presented itself. What transpired, how and why the author was overlooked for the position of Cabinet Secretary has been revealed from the author’s point of view for the first time in this book.
