DICRC develops repository of Indian vernacular furniture

Mon, May 06, 2019 Research

The Design Innovation and Craft Resource Centre (DICRC) is currently involved in developing a one of its kind repository of vernacular furniture of North-West India covering the states of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana. The project aims at identifying, mapping, documenting and studying vernacular furniture that has traditionally been an inherent part of an Indian household. The furniture was recorded and catalogued under five typologies (aasan, manch, manjush, sapaat, vastu) based on use of the furniture item. The survey was carried out digitally using a mobile application specially developed by the researchers at DICRC and captured photographic data and a form-based inventory. It was supported with detailed drawings and rich interviews. The project is part of an international collaborative research with the South Asian Decorative Arts and Craft Collection Trust (SADACC), Norwich, UK. Read more
