The Center for Excellence- Urban Transport in collaboration with the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) co-organized a two day workshop on Electrification of Public Transport with WRI India on 23rd and 24th September. The workshop brought together knowledge and experiences with regards to bus electrification in India. The Government of India's FAME 1 and FAME 2 schemes that incentivize purchase of electric buses and setting up of charging infrastructure have triggered the transition to electric public mobility in cities. However effective scaling up will require robust frameworks for technology adoption, operations, financing and capacity building. The workshop facilitated peer-to-peer learning on effective deployment and operations of electric buses in Indian cities. Representatives from the Governments of Kerala and Gujarat shared their pioneering efforts in formulating effective State level EV policies. Participants also had an opportunity to gain an understanding of E-Bus Operations in Ahmedabad through field visits and facilitated discussions. The workshop was supported by Shakti Sustainable Energy under the ‘Electric Mobility Forum’ initiative and the United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD) as a pre-event in preparation for the 12th Regional EST Forum in Asia, to be held in Hanoi, Vietnam in October.
