Bundelkhand is a geographical and cultural region in central and north India. The region encompasses dense forests in the west, south and south-eastern parts while the northern parts are covered by an area of scrub and the land is watered by the rivers Jamuna, Chambal, Betwa, Dhasan, and Ken. This hilly region, housing a rich range of built and cultural heritage, is presently divided between the states of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. The region of Bundelkhand (within Uttar Pradesh) has many important cultural and tourist attractions such as Kalinjar, Jhansi, and Mahoba among others. Considering the opportunities associated with the new Bundelkhand expressway, the Directorate of Tourism (DoT), Government of Uttar Pradesh aims to attract domestic and international tourists to the natural and cultural heritage of the region, including its forts, natural geography, heritage, palaces, and the overall ecosystem including water bodies and hills. With this background, the DoT has engaged Center for Heritage Conservation, CEPT Research Development Foundation (CRDF), Ahmedabad for the preparation of a ‘Conceptual Vision and Tourism Perspective Plan for the Bundelkhand Region (UP)’.
