Support for Scheduled Desludging in Kabwe, Zambia

The Lukanga Water and Sanitation Company (LgWSC) is a utility in Kabwe town in the central province of Zambia that intends to implement scheduled desludging of septic tanks. Under this project, CWAS provided support to LgWSC to interactively design and conduct a pilot for scheduled desludging. Findings of the experience were further used to refine a desludging service and business model that can be scaled up to the entire town. This was funded by SNV - Zambia, and CWAS was additionally partnered with a local firm. This has helped demonstrate a successful case of scheduled desludging in sub-Saharan Africa and provided valuable lessons for improving on-site sanitation services and city-level scale-up.
